Jones, Alexis. "How Safe are GMO?" Youngzine, 28 Mar 2018. Sirsdiscoverer, https://explore.proquest.com/sirsdiscoverer/document/2265394250?accountid=3673.
Summary
The article "How Safe are GMO?" by Alexis Jones looks at some of the research done on GMOs and makes the argument that they are safe for both human consumption, and have no detrimental impacts on the environment. According to the article despite FDA approval, there is still much debate over the effects of GMOs. The article goes on to highlight a group of Italian researchers who looked at around 6,006 studies dealing with the effects of genetically modified corn on the environment as well as human health. The article states that the study concluded that there are no significant human health or environmental threats posed as a result of GMOs. In particular, the studies showed that farmers on average used fewer pesticides when planting genetically modified corn. Resulting in not only healthier harvests, but fewer poisons flowing into the water supply. In regards to the effects on human health, scientists could find no difference between genetically modified corn, and corn that had been specifically bred to have unique characteristics. The final warning of this article states though that the research on GMOs is still in its infancy and nothing is definitive can be said until about seventy years has past and we see what GMOs do over an individual's lifespan.
Reflection
The article "How Safe are GMOs?" by Alexis Jones is a good source to use when it comes to finding quotes that support the pro- GMO argument. Even though the article indicates that GMOs are safe for both humans and the environment, the information in the article is presented in a nonpartisan way. Since the article is not picking a side in the issue it allows the information to speak for itself. Even though the article does not specifically take a side in the issue, the research that it presents supports the idea that GMOs are not harmful to the environment, and pose no health risks when it comes to human consumption. There are many quotes from this article that can be used to help support both the human health aspect of the issue and the argument that GMOs are actually beneficial to the environment. One of the downsides of this article is that it does not actually present any of the research that is used to inform the author’s assessment of the issue. Because this article lacks the research and scientific data, more research needs to be found in order to back up the claims of this article and prove that the author’s assessment of the issue is in fact backed up by the data.
